ONYX SELCHP

THE SITUATION

ONYX SELCHP operates and maintains the South East London Combined Heat and Power plant which burns household waste as fuel. In 1994, the company experienced problems with specialist vertical reeling cables for the electro-hydraulic grab which is at the core of the operation's process. Downtime at this point cannot be tolerated because the plant itself would have to be shut down.

THE SOLUTION

Elmeridge Cables was recommended to the Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineer at SELCHP responsible for the grab, which is hoisted up and down a 40-metre drop, with the vertical reeling cable used both for powering and controlling the mechanism. To meet this application, Elmeridge was able quickly to supply multi-core cable of the required strength, with service backed up by a director of the company.

THE RESULT

No cable problems have arisen since Elmeridge was appointed and, although specification was critical, Elmeridge has also proved price-competitive. "Elmeridge provide a flexible and friendly service, know what they are talking about - and solved the problem," comments SELCHP's EC&I Engineer.
